Dealing with boredom when you are locked in

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

I just Googled to see what people say about boredom.

Not surprisingly, there is a negative perception of boredom.

I couldn't see any positive ones in 25 Quotes on Boredom from Psychology Today.

It is seen a negative feeling that needs to be gotten rid of.

As I covered in other articles, all emotions have a reason. They are the lights on our dashboard. We need to see what they are trying to say to us. (Please see Understanding Motivation and Emotion by Johnmarshall Reeve.)

Boredom might be a signal that we are missing some important things in our lives.

Maybe we are not paying enough attention to what is going on.

Maybe we have been thinking and reflecting too much without taking any meaningful action.

Or on the contrary, it is time to meditate and take it slow.

Growing something, growing our curiosity

Last week, I saw the top of a carrot in a plate. I asked what it was and heard the answer that it was one way to grow a carrot again!

What a wonderful idea!

I hadn't tried something like this since my junior-high-school days.

Now, every morning, I am excited to see how much it grew overnight.

When we are locked in, maybe the best thing is to get curious again toward things.

Then we can enjoy how wonderful simple (but in fact complex) things are!
